The Ultimate Guide On How to Build a Mobile Chicken Tractor (With Plans)!

If you’ve ever dreamed of raising your own meat birds while keeping costs low and efficiency high, this chicken tractor DIY project is the perfect place to start. In this video, we share how we built a simple, affordable, and movable enclosure using mostly scrap materials—spending just $25 on netting—so our Cornish Cross chicks could enjoy fresh grass, sunshine, and protection from predators. Whether you’re aiming for self-sufficiency or simply curious about raising chickens for meat, this build proves you don’t need expensive materials or weeks of labor to get started.

In this video, we take you along for our very first adventure raising meat birds by building a budget-friendly, multi-purpose chicken tractor. Starting with a clear goal of becoming more self-sufficient, we designed a simple, functional, and movable pen that allows our Cornish Cross chicks to live right on fresh grass from just a few days old. Using mostly leftover lumber and materials we already had on hand, the only expense was $25 for a roll of upgraded poultry netting—an investment we quickly realized was worth every penny for its flexibility, safety, and ease of use compared to standard chicken wire.

You’ll see the entire process from the chicks’ arrival to getting them settled in their new space, and hear why we skipped the brooder stage in favor of a more natural setup—similar to how a hen would raise them. We discuss how the lightweight build makes daily moves easy for one person, giving the birds fresh pasture, bugs, and sunlight each day while keeping them safe from predators inside a larger protected area. Along the way, we share our future plans for the tractor, including using it as a grow-out pen for rabbits when it’s not housing chickens, and possible upgrades like adding a rope pull or a painted “Shoot Dang” logo on the roof.

We also talk about the practical side of raising meat birds: why these chicks aren’t pets, how we’ll feed and care for them until processing time, and our hope to fill the freezer with healthy, home-raised chicken in just a matter of weeks. You’ll hear some fun behind-the-scenes moments—like naming the birds after breakfast foods—and get insight into how reusing scrap materials and upcycling fits into our lifestyle. Whether you’ve raised chickens before, are curious about building your own portable pen, or just want a peek into ranch life, this video offers inspiration, tips, and plenty of personality as we work toward our homesteading goals.
